Closed Uranium Mine, Various Projects
Grants, New Mexico
Existing Topography: Reclamation project requiring ground topography of over 650 acres at a retired uranium mine, including debugging the existing control at the old mine which had no record of the existing benchmark data or horizontal grid information. Surveyors performed ground operations for this security and safety sensitive project in less than one week. Utilizing GPS receivers mounted to all-terrain vehicles, the Bowman team collected over 34,000 points, defining the ground features and grid data for the site. This was done in just over five days; each day began with a one-hour safety meeting and finished with a scan-out and wash-down for radiation decontamination.
Modeling for Machine Grading: Using the existing topographic map as a base for modeling, machine grading models of channels, pond caps and other improvements were prepared for this reclamation project. Surveyors trained specifically to handle this radioactive site support an ongoing contract to provide bi-monthly as-built drawings, QA/QC for grading, and quantity reports for contractor payment applications for the duration of this project. All ground activities require diligent decontamination procedures to minimize radiation exposure.
