Herrity Building Green Roof
Fairfax County, Virginia

Fairfax County incorporates and continually seeks new practices to minimize the environmental footprint of County-owned buildings and facilities. A significant component of the County’s environmental conservation and stewardship efforts focus on internal building operations such as energy conservation, recycling and waste reduction. Currently in the design phase, the green roof project on the Herrity Building Parking Garage provides an external building initiation that simultaneously addresses stormwater run-off and management, energy efficiency and reduction of the urban heat island effect, all recognized by the County as important environmental stewardship issues.
Bowman Consulting was an integral partner in the design of this green roof project. Bowman Consulting’s team of landscape architects and environmental scientists assisted in defining programmatic elements and in the creation of a green roof “feasibility study”. A day long charrette was also hosted to discuss projected accomplishments of the garden, which included a reduction in energy costs, reduction of stormwater run-off and the increase of green space and habitat for wildlife.
