Town of Kilmarnock Streetscape Improvements
Kilmarnock, VA

The Downtown Kilmarnock Revitalization Project included civil engineering and utility design. The project addresses pedestrian and bicycle safety while recognizing the importance of through-traffic to the Town’s vitality. TEA-21 funding allowed for improvements to be made to the Main Street between Burke’s Jewelers and Cralle Court. Completed in the summer 2006, the project will advance the economic growth of the community by enhancing Main Street and its surroundings.
Some of the improvements to the sidewalks and streetscape include:
- Gateway signs and landscaping to identify the downtown Main Street area.
- Landscaped chokers to help enforce speed limits and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians, while allowing adequate and safe turning movements for cars and trucks utilizing public roads.
- Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, clearly identified crossings, and protected seating and parking areas.
- New curbs, gutters, and road surfaces to complement the sidewalk improvements.
- Improvements to side streets intersecting with Main Street.
- Strong pedestrian connections to municipal parking lots.
- Relocation of overhead utilities to underground duct banks to improve the appearance of Main Street.
