Fairfax Village Neighborhood Center
Fort Belvoir, VA

The Fairfax Village Neighborhood Center, on Fort Belvoir, is a community building that was designed and constructed to achieve LEED-NC2.2 Platinum Certification which was awarded by the United States Green Building Council in April 2009. This is the first Certified LEED Platinum project on a United States military installation, only the second Certified Platinum project in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and one of currently 167 Platinum projects world-wide. This project also exemplifies the standards set forth in the objectives of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisor’s Environmental Agenda.
Bowman Consulting provided civil engineering and surveying services for this project. The building and surrounding site were designed to minimize the footprint and maximize vegetated open space, promote the use of recycled materials and minimize construction waste. Bowman’s Low Impact Development (LID) approach to storm water management dealt with storm water in an environmentally sensitive manner - promoting ground water recharge and mimicking the runoff character of a natural forest. Some of these strategies included pervious concrete, rain gardens, drought-tolerant landscaping, best management practices-BMP quantity and quality controls, and pollutant removal techniques. The stormwater management system captures and treats storm water runoff from 90% of the average annual rainfall that hits the site.
This project was recently recognized with a Fairfax County Exceptional Design Award.
