Fort Myer Storm System and Sanitary Sewer Upgrade
Arlington, VA

Fort Myer Military Community, which covers approximately 256 acres overlooking the Potomac River, is the Army’s official ceremonial unit and security force in the Washington metropolitan area. It is home to the Army’s oldest infantry unit - the 3rd US Infantry Regiment, the Army Band, the Army and Air Force Chiefs of Staff, and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. The Fort Myer Historic District is a National Historic Landmark bounded by US 50 (Arlington Boulevard), Clarendon Boulevard, and Arlington National Cemetery.

Bowman Consulting is working with The Banneker Group, LLC and the Army Corps of Engineers on a scope of services which includes:
  • videotaping the sanitary and storm sewer lines
  • a sanitary sewer as-built survey
  • a storm sewer as-built survey
  • an existing conditions base map
  • capacity analysis
  • design solutions
Physical inspection of the storm and sanitary lines (over 100,000 LF) connected to the hundreds of buildings on the base includes collecting photographs, analyzing the video survey, and inspecting the condition of every pipe and structure in the system. This also includes documenting the types of existing storm structures and inlets.

Bowman is documenting structural defects and as-builts, considering them in the context of the County topographic surveys, and evaluating the existing system loads. Bowman is generating a detailed capacity analysis of the storm sewer and sanitary sewer systems with design flows generated based on the use of the buildings. Finally, Bowman will report its findings to the Corps of Engineers, detail the system deficiencies, and recommend engineered solutions to fix the problems.
